WINTER/SPRING 2010 COURSE CALENDAR




Visual Arts

Instructorless Life Drawing for Artists

On Monday evenings (excluding holidays), the Drawing Group holds instructor-less life drawing classes for professional and amateur artists.  We provide the facility, the seating, the model; you bring your own supplies and drawing board.  The classes, with their combination of short and long poses, give artists an opportunity to sharpen their life drawing skills.

Time:  Monday 7:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Fee:  $10 per session




Oil Painting
Instructor: Paul Abeleira

This course will focus on realistic painting techniques in traditional oils. Students will explore both direct “alla prima” and indirect approaches to painting as we create two still life paintings entirely from life. Other areas of focus will include composition, lighting, color mixing, use of mediums and preparation of different grounds.

Beginners Figure Drawing:
Gesture and shape, figure drawing basics.

Instructor: Hida Behzadi

This course is designed for students with no previous or minimal background in figure drawing.

Using a life model, students will develop the ability to create drawings that reflect a basic understanding of the body impulse, movement, weight, balance and proportion.

Students will get familiar with the setting of a life drawing studio and they will experience drawing with charcoal, charcoal pencil and Lead pencil in large and small formats.

There will be class demonstrations and series of take home assignments. This course will be the foundation for intermediate figure drawing.

Supplies list

18x24 Sketch Pad (Newsprint), you will ned minimum of one Sketch pad per session
Fold Back Clips or Bulldog Clips (x2)
Compressed Charcoal (Brown or Black, Demco or other known brands) Min. of 3 sticks
Charcoal pencil, 4B, matching with the charcoal colour (darker tone)
Art Gum (Staedler Kneadable Eraser)
Pencil: Mars Lumograph box set ranged from HB to 8B (alternatively B2, B4, B6)
Small cutter knife

Intermediate Figure Drawing:
Gesture, shape and form, basics of analytical figure drawing, closer study of human head and composition.

Instructor: Hida Behzadi


This course is designed for students who have some figure drawing background or participated in the basic figure drawing course.

During these 8 sessions students will work on both the body and the head structure. They will learn to simplify and solve perspective problems and pay closer attention to form, function and proportions of the body. There will be take home assignments to help student advance their drawing skills.

Students will experience drawing with charcoal and charcoal pencil, lead pencil and brush, pen and ink, in large and small formats.

Abstract Techniques in Acrylics

Introduction to Model Sculpting
Instructor: Aleid Uhl

Working in clay, the students will learn basic sculpting techniques and get acquainted with the principles and practices of anatomy and the proportions of head, torso and hands of the human figure. By the end of the course, each student will be in a position to proudly lay claim to a number of original works of art.

Sculpting the Human Figure

Working in clay, the students will learn a variety of sculpting techniques and get acquainted with the principles and practices of anatomy and the classical proportions of the human figure. The student will work on three assignments focusing on the male and female figure. By the end of the course, each student will be in a position to proudly lay claim to a number of original works of art

Oil Painting I

Instructor: Radek Vizina

Recommended Prerequisite: Introduction to Drawing or equivalent

This course is designed to give students a sound understanding of the fundamentals of painting in oil with a focus on direct painting or 'Alla Prima'. While working with a limited palette of colours, this course will cover colour theory, drawing versus painting, composition, and the techniques of painting. Exercises will be given to reinforce the materials discussed thereby giving students the opportunity to apply concepts from demonstrations and class discussion.

Oil Painting II
Instructor: Radek Vizina

Recommended Prerequisite: Oil Painting I or equivalent

This course is a continuation of  Oil Painting I and will focus on indirect painting, the way of the 'Old Masters'. While working with an extended palette of colours, you will be working on one still-life and one portrait painting. Techniques, materials and composition will be further discussed and exercises will be provided to give students the opportunity to apply concepts discussed in class.

Decorative Sculpting
Instructor: Aleid Uhl

During this course you will be introduced to a variety of basic sculpting techniques and the tools required to sculpt with paper clay (clay with paper fibres). The course has been designed to provide a base level of fluency in the arts with respect to the classical approach and fundamental skills of looking, seeing and making. You are encouraged to experiment with new ideas and to investigate your inner artistic talents style through personal interpretation and artistic expression. You’ll work on three different assignments: a relief-bas or tile, a book-end or lamp base, and a garden statue. By the end of the course, each student will be in a position to proudly lay claim to a number of original works of art.

There will be paper clay and many different hand tools available in order to experiment and create without limitations. Each assignment will be supported by a variety of illustrative materials about artists, their work, art styles through the ages, mythology, anatomy, stone tablets, and other relevant themes.
